Plumbing and gas fitting in Reservoir
Reservoir shares a border with Preston, so it is the closest suburb to our base and usually the quickest we can get anywhere. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, and same-day attendance here is the easy promise rather than the hard one.
Reservoir is the largest suburb in Melbourne by area, and most of it went up in the building boom between the 1920s and the 1970s. That means inter-war weatherboard and post-war brick veneer on generous blocks, under tree-lined streets. It also means the drain run from the house out to the street is long, the pipe under it is usually clay, and the trees along it have had half a century to work into the joints. Same cause as a blocked drain anywhere, on a very different scale: the fault can sit most of a block length from the house, so the question is rarely just what is blocking the line, it is where. We run the camera the full length of it and mark the fault on the surface before a shovel comes out.

What our customers say
Rated 5.0 out of 5 from 14 reviews on Google.
We received amazing service from AC Plumbing & Drainage. They sorted out our blocked drain quickly and explained everything clearly. Friendly, reliable and reasonably priced. Would definitely use them again!
We had heaps of issues with blocked drainage at our old property in the Darebin area. We didn’t really know what was going on, nor did the guys before AC. Driveway flooding became a bit of an issue. When we called AC he arrived the same afternoon and sorted it quick fast! He’s got all the right gear and set up. Actually, I’m writing this 3 months since his visit and no dramas! I’ve referred him to a couple of friends and they’ve both got good feedback... Would definitely use them again!
Great plumber! Great guy to deal with. Will always use going forward. Glad I found him!!
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we are asked most often. If your question is not covered here, call us.
Why do tree roots keep blocking the same drain in Reservoir?
Clay sewer pipe was laid in short lengths with a joint between each one, and a joint is the one part of the line that is not sealed against a root. Once a root is through, it grows towards the water and keeps growing. Clearing the drain cuts the roots out but leaves the opening they came through, which is why the same line blocks again on a cycle. A camera tells you which it is: a joint the roots are getting through, or a section that has cracked or dropped. That is the difference between clearing it again next winter and repairing the line properly.
My house is weatherboard from the 1950s. Is the plumbing likely to be original?
Often, at least in part. Homes from that era around Reservoir were built with galvanised steel supply pipe and clay sewer lines, and plenty of both is still in the ground. Galvanised narrows from the inside as it corrodes, so it shows up as water pressure that has quietly dropped over years rather than as a burst. Clay cracks at the joints and lets roots in. Neither has to be replaced on a schedule, but both are worth knowing about before a renovation, because that is the cheapest time to deal with them.
Do you cover all of Reservoir?
Yes. Reservoir is the largest suburb in Melbourne by area, so postcode 3073 covers a lot of ground. We work all of it, from the Preston border in the south up past Edwardes Lake, and right across between the Merri and Darebin creeks. Thomastown, Lalor and Preston next door as well.
How quickly can you get here?
Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are based in Preston and work across the northern suburbs, so response times are short. For emergencies we will give you a realistic arrival time on the phone, and advise you on isolating the water or gas in the meantime.
What does a call-out cost?
You receive a free quote before any work begins. We assess the job, explain what is involved and confirm the price with you. No work goes ahead until you have approved it.
Do you work after hours and on weekends?
Yes. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency plumbing and gas work.
Which suburbs do you cover?
Preston, Reservoir, Thornbury, Northcote, Fairfield, Ivanhoe, Heidelberg, Heidelberg West, Macleod, Greensborough, Bundoora, Mill Park, Epping, Lalor, Thomastown, Coburg, Brunswick, Fawkner, Glenroy and Pascoe Vale, along with the surrounding northern suburbs. If you are just outside this area, call us and ask.
Can you find a drain fault without digging?
In most cases, yes. We run a CCTV camera through the line and record the condition of the pipe, which identifies the fault and its depth from the surface. Any excavation is then limited to that one location.
Do you do gas fitting as well as plumbing?
Yes. We install and connect gas appliances, run new gas points, detect and repair leaks, and carry out carbon monoxide safety checks. Every gas installation is tested and certified on completion.
